MONITORING DEVELOPMENT CAREFULLY

An infant’s foot has an increased amount of cartilage rather than bone and over time as the foot grows, the cartilage will fuse and harden into adult bones. The structure of the foot develops fully by the first two years, however the bones themselves do not fully develop and form between the ages of 13-18 years. This in turn makes the feet more flexible and for this reason its why children’s feet are very different to an adult’s foot.

A Podiatrist can assess a child’s feet and lower limb issues at any age. As children grow very quickly, so can things change rapidly in the feet. Monitoring that development carefully can help to identify any issues that may arise and allow them to be dealt with sooner rather than later in adulthood.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR PODIATRIST FOR ADVICE?

We recommend that you see a Podiatrist for advice and review if:

  • Your child is complaining of pain in the foot, ankle, knees or legs
  • Your child is limping and cannot run very far without pain
  • Your child has poor co-ordination and always tripping and falling
  • You’re concerned about the appearance of your child’s feet or the way they walk
  • Notice uneven shoe wear patterns
  • Notice any unusual skin or nail issues with the feet
  • Your child needs a footwear assessment
